I didn’t have it when I was a kid. But there is no doubt in my mind I have it now.
I used to joke that I have it. And then I read Here’s to Not Catching Our Hair on Fire: An Absent-Minded Tale of Life with Giftedness and Attention Deficit - Oh Look! A Chicken!, and I realized it was a fact.
The latest evidence of my ADHD is here, for you to see. Meaning my website redesign. I liked my old design just fine, but it just didn’t feel like me anymore.
Too many comments about it being “clean” (which is FINE) - which sounded to me like “boring”. And I hate boring.
So, I started to reevaluate what it was that I didn’t like about my website. Really, there wasn’t much. Fonts were off. Header no longer seemed like a good fit. Plain white background was just meh.
Back to the drawing board… and we have what you see before you.
So, what does this have to do with my ADHD?
Part of what I notice about myself is that I thrive on change. When I need some juice for getting myself in action again, I have to change something. Even if it’s just the furniture. Or painting a wall. Or redoing my design board.
When I’m struggling to find my juju again, I change something. And it works almost every time.
Except when it doesn’t. Because sometimes I change things just to change things. And I end up making a mess of things.
Like the time I decided to hang some items in my kids playroom to change it up a little. (I should mention here that I suck at hanging things on the wall…) When I was done, there were a bunch of holes in the plaster. That needed to be patched. But I didn’t want to patch them. So I just covered them up with the stuff I was hanging. Years later when I decided to move things again (which is inevitable) - I was left with these awful holes everywhere.
That’s the conundrum. How to have constructive change without causing a mess. If you’ve got any great tips, I’d LOVE to hear them…

The new website looks fun! Nice work! When it comes to hanging things on the wall, I use that old adage: measure twice, hammer once. It’s not always perfect, but usually means only 1 extra hole, not a bunch…. good luck!
Hugs and butterflies,
~Teresa~
Thanks!
Well it’s beautiful! I don’t think it’s possible to have constructive change without leaving something of a mess.
Thanks love!
I mega dig the new design Amanda!! And I think that one of my favorite parts of being a kid was being able to get dirty…it’s just so refreshing and raw and real. So, I say THREE CHEERS for your messes! It’s part of the beauty of change, and I am certain it’s part of what makes you magical and kick-ass! Thank you for sharing-I think I need to read that book, too! 🙂
Oddly, I LOVE to get dirty in a controlled environment. Like I’d totally roll around in mud for the right reasons. But I won’t eat ribs or wings in public. No way, no how. Maybe I should rethink that rule…
oh Lord.. if wanting new website redesigns is a sign of ADHD I am in BIG trouble, as you my designer well knows! First of all the site is beyond gorgeous.. love it love it.. charming and beautiful. And I recognized way too much of myself in this post.. like when I decided I needed to repaint my dining room (gorgeous emerald green) 2 days before having 21 people for Thanksgiving.. was literally pulling the blue painting tape off the walls an hour before people showed up… and many other stories like that..
I think of it as “liking”color!!
The site is amazing..
Love to you,
Lisa
That’s what it is - liking color!
Ha! I’d love to hear them, too! I need to read the book you mentioned, for sure.
And how to keep kids from becoming the same?!? I’m constantly telling mine, “focus…one thing at a time…” and the like. Meanwhile, I’m doing 10 things at once while talking to them. 🙂
Oh yes - I do that exact same thing to my kids.
Love the site…..and I totally get the adult ADD thing. I always have to change things…I’m a total tweeker but with out the Meth.( Thank Goddess!)
Funny you mention the holes in the wall. I’m sitting here noticing some across the room right now from when I moved the pictures.Plus I have one wall of my bathroom painted a “test color”…that was two years ago. Still haven’t decided if I like enough to pain the rest of the bathroom. *sigh*
I absolutely LOVE your website. Just found it today through Headway showcase. I want one like it! Beautiful. It seems a little wide for the ipad screen or is that just me?
