Don’t Be A Copy

If there is one thing that makes me absolutely insane as a web designer, it’s people who tell me, “I want a website exactly like this…”

Because you don’t.

You may think that’s what you want, but it isn’t.

And here’s why.

That website was created for someone else. And it fits them. You are not them. Therefore, that website is not perfect for you.

You can love it all day. And you can feel free to be inspired by it, but you can not copy it.

Okay, technically you can, but you don’t want to be that person. You want a website that fully reflects you, who you are, and what you are about.

Or at least, you should.

Your website is out of necessity the first piece of you that people who don’t know you personally see. If you want them to be inclined to get to know you better, your website should fully represent you as much as a piece of digital art can.

What bothers me more is when a designer is willing to copy the design that someone else developed.

My goal with each of the websites I work on is that each of them is unique. I want your website to represent you.

When the right person lands on your website, they will say, “AH, I get this one. She’s my kind of person.” And when the wrong person lands on your website, they just won’t get it. And that’s okay.

When you are fully you in life and on the web, the right people will find you. The people that you don’t have to explain yourself to. The people who just understand you and your quirks and they adore you anyway. And those are the only people who should matter.

When you try to twist yourself and/or your website into a thing that everyone loves, you are doing yourself and your people a disservice.

You are watering down your you-ness. And you are representing yourself as something you are not.

For goodness sake, please be you. The world needs you, not a copy of a guru, or anyone else.
