Watkins Glen State Park – Upstate New York

When you have to drive all the way from Ohio to Maine, it’s best to find ways to break up the trip.

It’s exactly 1054 miles from our driveway to Mount Desert Island, Maine (our furthest most destination for this trip). Which translates to 18+ hours without any traffic or bathroom stops.

Clearly, you see that 18+ hours in a car with three teenagers was never going to be a good idea.

As such, we planned to stop along the way, and I’d been just dying to check out Watkins Glen State Park. It was only 8 hours into the trip, but totally worth the stop.

Let me preface this by saying that unless you enter the gorge via the tunnel entrance (we didn’t – we were camping in the state park), you will have a HIKE to get down and back up.

I’m gonna hit you with a bunch of numbers here… 200ft cliffs. A stream that drops 400 feet in a two mile span. 19 waterfalls. 800 steps to climb up and down.

That’s right…the gorge is 400 feet deep and 200 feet high. This 40 year old mostly-out-of-shape mama nearly died walking the steps back up, but I survived, so you can too.

Believe me, it’s worth it.
